May 18-19 Women’s Retreat: We will be sleeping over at the farm house and learning about “Loving Well”. I really need your RSVP’s in order to collect the journals that go with the retreat. This is going to be fun. Don’t miss it. You may attend with an infant. There is still room for you.
May 27-Lang’s Memorial Day Fest: Make sure to leave this date free and fellowship with our church family, beginning at 4 PM.
Chapelgate’s Summer Camp (VBS): As in the past, we have sometimes joined Chapelgate Presbyterian Church during the summer for their VBS. I will be leading the music program again this year and would love for you to join me. It will be held on July 9-13, from 9:00am - 12:30pm for upcoming 1st graders through upcoming 6th graders. The theme this year is “Rainforest Expedition” and looks like loads of fun. Visit www.chapelgate.org/camp to register online or to volunteer and help out for the week. We would love to have both volunteers and attendees. 7th graders and up may volunteer.
From Luke 9:37-50
The thread holding all of these stories together is human pride. The disciples fail to exorcise the demon because of self-confidence ... their lack of dependent faith. The disciples are afraid to ask Jesus what he means when they don't understand him because they are concerned for their own reputations, as their argument over who is the greatest shows. And by rebuking a man for successfully casting out demons in Jesus' name, they show that their arrogance is not only individual, but cliquish. In every instance, the disciples' pride is their error.
Jesus corrects them, illustrating our proper posture before God and others by setting a child before them. A child is dependent and (at least ought to be) humble. This is the demeanor appropriate to a follower of Jesus. After all, all that we have we received, and depend on God for our continuing enjoyment of it. That principle extends to salvation, wisdom, understanding, wealth, power, etc. In every aspect of our lives, what we have is a gift from God. So...
There is no room for pride in a Christian's life ... unless it is pride in the hope of the kingdom of God, pride in what God has done and is doing. We can be proud of that. To God alone be the glory!
But no matter how foolish our humility is in the eyes of the world, we know that the wisdom of the world is foolishness to God. We know that when we are weak, that's when we are strong, because it is God working through us. His power is shown in our weakness. And we know that the wealth of the world perishes, but the treasures of the kingdom endure. And since God has given us peace and purity, we have no fear. Fear and pride characterize the world, but the fearless and bold humility of Christians stands out as a light in a dark world.
